Story

(Thinking about my beautiful mother and hoping she approved of my life choices.)

Lyrics

On the first day of school you woke me up early said, “Come walk with me”

You held my hand and we walked together to the old Mulberry tree

And I don’t remember a word that you said

Just how important I felt jumping out of my bed

To go walk in the morning with my mother to the Mulberry tree

I was your first baby I came along early when you were just 19

You’d tell me the story of the first time I smiled when you were holding me

You said your heart stopped and the world looked brand new

You said love never felt any bigger to you

And I understood when my own baby first smiled at me

When do the dreams of the mother become the dreams of the daughter

And if the daughter should find a less traveled road

Where does the mother go, where does she go

You always said one day that I’d be the writer with my own song to sing

Well this road’s been long and low and I often wonder now what you think of me

Living from suitcases so seldom home

With a million goodbyes to little girls of my own

Is this what you meant back when you, back when you’d dream for me

When do the dreams of the mother become the dreams of the daughter

And if the daughter should find a less traveled road

Where does the mother go, where does she go
