Story

(After a string of really bad days, I decided that only *I* could be in charge of how I was going to feel.  So if I deemed a bad day a good day, I was going to have a good day, by golly!)

Lyrics

Eight thirty seven in the freaking morning

Alarm clock broke so I got no warning

Of just how good this day is gonna be

Pour my coffee in my favorite cup

Run to kiss my baby try to wake him up

Change my facebook status to “as far as I can see”

It’s gonna be a good day, a good day

Gonna be a good day, a good day

Gonna be a good day, sing along with me

You can even sing off-key

La la la la, la la la la…

Car won’t start and I think it’s funny

When it rains it pours cause I got no money

It’ll take a little more than rain to change my mind

Call my best girlfriend to come and pick me up

Grab my pink umbrella cause it brings me luck

But I don’t need much cause I know that I will find

It’s gonna be a good day, a good day

Gonna be a good day, a good day

Gonna be a good day, sing along with me

You can even sing off-key

La la la la, la la la la…

If it’s mine for the taking

Might as well fake it into making it

A good day, a good day

Gonna be a good day, a good day

Gonna be a good day, sing along with me

You can even sing off-key

La la la la, la la la la…

Eight thirty seven in the freaking morning

Alarm clock broke so I got no warning

Of just how good this day is gonna be

Story

(Tom, Jagoda, Amy and I were standing in our kitchen having a conversation doing the dinner dishes and one of us said the line, "what if I don't wanna give up my story?" and another one of us said, I think that's a song...an hour later, it was.)

Lyrics

I don’t wanna give up my story

I don’t wanna give up my pride

I don’t wanna give you the glory

If I could I woulda let you inside

I don’t wanna give up my story

I don’t wanna give up my lie

I don’t wanna let you explore me

But I don’t wanna tell you why

Peel back the layers

What do you see

Nothin in the middle but me

If I had to give up my story

If I could give it to you

Would you hold on to it for me

Would you know what to do with the truth

Cause if you unravel my story

Will you be ok when you see

Or do you think you’re gonna be sorry

When there’s nothing in the middle but me

Story

(Songs come to you in strange places sometimes.  I was sitting in a little church getting ready to sing the special music, when the lyrics to the chorus of this song starting coming to me.  I wrote it down just before I got up to sing.  By the time I drove home from church, the lyrics were done.  I pulled Tom in to help with the musical feel.)

Lyrics

I used to wish on every meteor shower
One shooting star was not enough for me
I used to search for skies wrapped in rainbows
One pot of gold was not enough for my dreams

All I ever wanted was everything, everything
All I ever wanted
All I ever wanted was everything
Till all I ever wanted was you

I kissed a thousand frogs looking for charming
My mama said it was the thing to do
I’d close my eyes just like a kid at Christmas
Imagine my surprise when I kissed you

All I ever wanted was everything, everything
All I ever wanted
All I ever wanted was everything
Till all I ever wanted was you

I don’t need picket fences
I don’t need diamond rings
I don’t need anything
No anything no anything
But you…

All I ever wanted was everything, everything
All I ever wanted
All I ever wanted was everything
Till all I ever wanted was you

Story

(There are days when we all feel small.  This was one of those days for me.)

Lyrics

I’m just a drop in the bucket

One small fish in the sea

Billions of stars burn brighter by far

Nobody wishes on me

I’m just a rodeo cowboy

Learn what I know from the clowns

Land in the dirt pretend not to hurt

Don’t let em know when you’re down

And the band plays on

Nobody knows that you’re gone

And the band plays on

And nobody knows…

I’m just a slip of a shadow

Tied to a wayward balloon

Floating above everything that I love

Here between home and the moon

And the band plays on

Nobody knows that you’re gone

And the band plays on

And nobody knows…

Story

(This was the first song I wrote on the ukulele.  The chord progression came first.  In playing it over and over, I felt like I was bring drawn into an earlier simpler time.  The verse about Jimmy Stewart kind of fell out.  The rest fell out shortly after.  It was so fun to write, that I realized the uke was around to stay...)

Lyrics

It’s a wonder that I never tried to marry Jimmy Stewart

Just so he’d lasso me the moon

I’ve always been a little too romantic

Get my hopes up.  Get my heart broke way too soon

Life’s never quite as happy as they make it in the movies

Even though I wish it were that way

Don’t you ever wanna ride off in the sunset

A girl can dream. That’s all I’m trying to say

But then again there’s John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara

And the time he dragged her by the hair

She hollered like she didn’t like it

But I saw her smile love’s a complicated affair

Some days I really wanna be the girl that thinks she’s leaving

Just to hear the boy beg her to stay

Maureen O’Hara needed John Wayne to fight for her

I need you. That’s all I’m trying to say

It’s just that maybe loves the hardest thing we do.

I still want you I still want you

Even if you pulled a Tony Curtis and dressed up like a woman

I’d be your Marilyn Monroe

Who knows maybe it would be hot

I doubt it but at least I’d enjoy the show

Like Marilyn and Tony things can get a little wacky

And I wonder when we’ll ever be okay

Well it’s you and me to the end

I love you.  That’s all I’m trying to say

Story

(It was new years day.  I was tired of writing resolutions I didn't keep.  Figured it was time to write a song instead...)

Lyrics

If I could let the big world spin

Maybe then I wouldn’t be here in the middle of the mess I’m in

With all my might I’ve been holding on a bit too tight

Wasting everybody’s precious time and never getting anything right

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

I think it’s time to let go

If I could see everything that’s good in me

And believe in every little wish I ever wished that I could be

Then I would fly with every birdy in the sky

And they’d be wondering why it took so long for me to give it a try

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

I think it’s time to let go

So raise a glass to all that petrified me in the past

Hanging on’s the surest way of never getting anywhere fast

And one last toast to all my good for nothing ghosts

Then I’ll kick em out the door so I can welcome what I’m wanting the most

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

I think it’s time to let go

Story

(I was hiding in the bathroom for a few minutes peace from my family.  I saw "Water for Elephants" on my bathroom shelf. A few hours later, Suzanne came to life.)

Lyrics

Suzanne ran away with the circus

When she was forty- three

Misses her kids occasionally

As she swings on her trapeze

But she doesn’t miss washing dishes

As she flies through the air

With the breeze in her hair

Devil may care

But you can’t have everything

Everything, everything, no you can’t

You can’t have everything, everything

Can you Suzanne

She fell pretty hard for a carnie

On the train to Tucumcari

Where she wished she wasn’t married

Just for a night

Cause she couldn’t resist when he kissed her

Just a little longer

Just a little wronger

Than she knew was right

But you can’t have everything

Everything, everything, no you can’t

You can’t have everything, everything

Can you Suzanne

But sometimes it’s the dreams that get you through

All the hardest things you have to do

Suzanne came back home from the circus

When she was forty-four

Knowing she’d miss her family more

She let go and fell to the floor

She'll never like washing dishes

But at night when no ones there

She’ll feel the breeze in her hair

Devil may care

But you can’t have everything

Everything, everything, no you can’t

You can’t have everything, everything

Can you Suzanne

Story

(Tom and I were sick of winter.  Wishing for a little spring...)

Lyrics

Hey little violet why so quiet spring is almost here

And underneath the snow banks you are blooming

All the while you act so unassuming

Hey little violet why so quiet spring is almost here

Hey little violet why so quiet tell me why so blue

When up above your head the birds are singing

As if they all can hear what you are thinking

Hey little violet why so quiet tell me tell me true

Tell me why every little thing can’t happen

Just the way you want it to

Tell me why you can never stop from laughing

When I say I love you

Hey little violet why so quiet spring is almost here

And underneath the snow banks you are blooming

All the while you act so unassuming

Hey little violet why so quiet spring is almost here

Story

(For anyone that's ever been in a marriage...)

Lyrics

I can’t tell you what to do

Even though sometimes I want to

But you don’t like when I’m controlling

So you sneak out and go bowling

That’s why we’re both in therapy

It’s nice to have a referee

She gets the big bucks just to listen

And validate who cleans the kitchen

I know you clean it more than me

But I do stuff that you don’t see

At least that’s what you should tell your friends

If you plan to have sex again

I’m glad we agree to agree

That I love you and you love me

Story

(Written for my daughter, Caroline, on a day when she needed a little extra help.)

Lyrics

She doesn’t dream the biggest dreams

Least that’s the way it seems to me

And so it’s with a mother’s heart I pray

She needs a little miracle

Just a little miracle

She needs a little miracle today

She doesn’t have the Midas touch

She doesn’t really ask for much

So if you could just help her on her way

She needs a little miracle

Just a little miracle

She needs a little miracle today

Maybe there are brighter stars

Maybe there will always be

Still she shines so beautiful to me

God I hope you’re listening

I love her more than anything

I guess that’s really all I wanna say

She needs a little miracle

Just a little miracle

She needs a little miracle today

Story

(Written for my high school boyfriend, Jimbo Garner.  And that's all I have to say about that.)

Lyrics

I remember your old Camaro

It was loud and proud and fast as an arrow

You’d drive up for dates cussin your broken door

I’d shimmy through your window…my daddy would pace the floor

I was seventeen and a little bit scared to death

Of splendor in the grass and cigarettes on your breath

Of kissing in the back seat and going straight to hell

Till another fellow came along and broke your spell

I went and left you for Jesus

It seemed like the right thing to do

I went and left you for Jesus

But I always had more fun with you

Jesus didn’t like to drink Jesus didn’t like to dance

He never stayed out too late and he wasn’t big on romance

Least that’s what the preacher said when you took me to the senior prom

But you brought me home early on account of the devil and my mom

I went and left you for Jesus

It seemed like the right thing to do

I went and left you for Jesus

But I always had more fun with you

I’m sorry for the bible verses I shoved down your throat

I’m sorry for the sound that your heart made when it broke

Cause I went and left you for Jesus

It seemed like the right thing to do

I went and left you for Jesus

But I always had more fun with you

Story

(I was teaching at a songwriting camp in Washington state.  Looking at a strip of "photo booth pictures" of my family and me when I was about 6 years old.  Started wondering what inspired my dreams and my parents dreams in those days.)

Lyrics

Six years old in the summer of 69.
Ten o’clock was way past my bedtime
In my tiny Texas town the world seemed small when the sun went down
And the moon was just a word in a nursery rhyme

But all that changed one night in late July
Glued to the TV screen eyes on the sky
And I can tell you what I thought, when I saw that astronaut
Step out on the moon, I said goodbye

Goodbye little world I’m just a little girl
But anything is possible anything is possible
Goodbye little dreams, I was meant for bigger things
And anything is possible anything is possible
Anything is possible

Nineteen eighty it was February cold
Home on a Friday night, fifteen years old
Dad said come here if you can, I know you’re not a hockey fan
But we watched that team take Russia for the gold

Goodbye little world, I’m just a high school girl
But anything is possible anything is possible
Goodbye little dreams I was meant for bigger things
And anything is possible anything is possible
Anything is possible

My feet may never touch moon. I’ll never win Olympic gold
But these are not the dreams I dream, if the truth is really told.
If you want to know what’s really true
I’d rather be here singing songs with you

Hello little world, I’m just a simple girl
And anything is possible anything is possible
Hello little dreams you are big enough for me
Cause anything is possible anything is possible
Anything is possible

Story

(Sitting by the river at the Kerrville Folk Festival waiting on Tom to finish writing a song with Johnsmith.  Pondering life and the need to love ourselves more than we expect other people to love us.)

Lyrics

Toes in the water

Contemplating clouds

And conversations that I have with you

But never out loud

Shouldn't be so difficult

To say what's on my mind

But baby you're aware

I've always been the cautious kind

But I know

Even though

I'm inclined to depend

On you for a clue

To believe even when

I'm the one who has to love me in the end

Smile for your camera

But sometimes it's hard

Watching you parade your indifference

Right through my front yard

Thinking you should know by now

From all my shaky starts

The fragile condition

Of my sensitive heart

But I know

Even though

I'm inclined to depend

On you

For a clue

To believe even when

I'm the one who has to love me in the end

Till I can face the mirror hanging on my wall

You can't be the one to catch me when I fall

But I know

Even though

I'm inclined to depend

On you

For a clue

To believe even when

I'm the one who has to love me in the end
